On the other hand, as we approach the early morning and are almost at the point of awakening, our dreams may become quite clear. It is more likely that they will be associated with our clarity during this period. If a dream is associated with clarity, it may have special meaning for our lives. It may indicate many things. M: There are occasions when we have a dream in which we are receiving advice that seems logical. Are we really getting advice?

N: Yes, there are again two possibilities. If your dream is linked with clarity you can really receive advice and truly useful information. On the other hand, if you have very strong tensions or attachments, you might also receive advice in a dream, but you wouldn't say that this is perfect advice. ±Ä³XªÌ¡]M¡^´£¨ì«n¶}¤W®v´¿·t¥Ü¡uwhen clarity develops in dreams, sometimes one can predict the future¡v¡A«n¶}¤W®v¦^µª»¡¡G¡u­Y§Aµo®i©ú©Ê¡A·íµM·|¦³³oÃþÅã²{¥X²{¦b§Aªº¹Ú¤¤¡C¸g¥Ñ³o¨Ç§A¦³®É·|µo²{¥¼¨Óªºµïµ·°¨¸ñ¡A¡v­ì¦]¦b©ó¡G

Dreams of clarity are linked through our experience with meditation practice and the positive actions we perform within our life. With regards to the karmic seeds we have accumulated, there is also the possibility that these potentials may become manifest. These potentials may become manifest when there are secondary conditions to ripen them. With the proper secondary conditions, manifestations such as dreams of the future may occur. We find many examples of these manifestations in the biographies of meditation masters. (Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light, p. 135)

N: Sometimes you can collaborate with your dream of clarity. It can become very useful for you in overcoming many problems. But changing events is not so easy because everything is linked with secondary causes §U½t. Sometimes they are very complicated secondary causes, and you cannot do very much. I told you the story of one of my friends in Italy. I had a very complicated dream about her, but I could not do anything. That is an example. Nevertheless, sometimes when we know that a dream says something about the future, we can modify our plans to avert a potential problem. (Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light, p. 137)

N: If one has the experience of transforming a bad situation into a peaceful situation in a dream, it only means that one has this experience in the dream. When one has the capacity of transforming bad into good or peaceful within a dream, it doesn't mean one also has that capacity in the bardo ¤¤³± after death.

If you want to be liberated you must have the power to connect with the awareness of your real nature. Your real nature is not a dualistic vision. Ideas of good and bad are linked with perception, which is it self the result of karma. Having knowledge of the bardo is another situation. First you need a method to discover your potential, then you discover that your potential is beyond life and death and beyond the limitations of your ordinary vision of good and bad. If you don't have this understanding of your real nature, I don't think there is a possibility of liberating yourself in the bardo. (Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light, p. 141)

M: I have heard that it is essential to have transmission from a master to receive these practices, to understand them, to develop them. Must you also have a transmission from a master in order to develop the practices of dream awareness?

N: If you want to have only a limited experience of dreams, to have awareness in dream time, or even some clarity experiences, you can do so even if you receive no transmission. However, if you want to consider the dream experience as your path, to see how it affects you beyond your life, after death, and to use your dream practice to prepare for the bardo, then you must get transmission. The direct transmission comes about through the unification of the state of the master with that of the disciple. An example of direct transmission can be found in the story of the awakening of Naropa, the famous Indian mahasiddha ¤j¦¨´NªÌ, who was a disciple of Tilopa. Direct Introduction

When a teacher gives a direct transmission it means that the teacher uses methods so that you can have an experience. All our energy is already deployed in the world to present the idea of self- what we are, who we want to be perceived as, how other people perceive us. The teaching of Dzogchen is in essence a teaching concerning the primordial ­ì©lªº¡B¥»ªìªº state of being that is each individual's own intrinsic ¥»½èªºnature from the very beginning. To enter this state of the universe - though not in the ordinary ego sense. The ordinary ego-centered consciousness is precisely the limited cage of dualistic vision that closed off the experience of one's own true nature, which is the space of the primordial state. ABE: What's the nature of the battle? Because you use the language of the warrior. What's the nature of the battle? What are you fighting?

FLORINDA D: The self. It's not even the self; it's an idea of the self, because if we would really get the self below the surface, we don't really know what it is. And it is possible to curtail this idea, this bombastic idea we have of the self. Because whether it's a negative idea or a positive idea doesn't really matter. The energy employed to sustain that idea is the same.

ABE: So there's tremendous emphasis in this tradition on overcoming what is called self-importance.

FLORINDA D: Self-importance, exactly. That's the main battle. To shut off our internal dialogue. Because even if we're isolated someplace, we are still constantly talking to ourselves. That internal dialogue never stops. And what does the internal dialogue do? It always justifies itself, no matter what. We replay things, events, what we could have said or could have done, what we feel or don't feel. The emphasis is always on me.
